U.S. pledges $44 million to drought-affected families in Afghanistan

The United States government pledged a fresh aid package of $44 million to assist with the drought-affected families in Afghanistan.

The U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan John Bass announced the new U.S. aid package to Afghanistan as he was speaking during a press conference in Kabul today.

The Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock Nasir Durani and representative of the World Food Program were also present during the conference.

Minister Durani said the new U.S. aid package would help the government to assist with nearly 1.4 million drought-affected people.

Durani further added that the funds would be utilized to assist with the provision of food and other first aid packages to the families.

According Durani, the government would also hand over 60 thousand metric tons of wheat to the World Food Program and would assist with the process, supply, and transportation of the wheat.

In the meantime, the World Food Program representative said the drought-affected families have received nearly half million metric tons of wheat since the launch of the distribution process nearly a year ago, emphasizing that the World Food Program would continue its support to the affected families.
