Mercy Health nurse visits Afghanistan

Sev Friskney, a cardiac nurse at Mercy Health-Cincinnati, visited Kabul, Afghanistan for six days this month to give 10 community health workers a crash course on blood pressure. The health workers, part of the nongovernmental organization Sozo International, learned how to read blood pressure devices and how to lower high numbers when there is no access to medication.

Friskney secured a grant to give the health workers 10 automated blood pressure cuffs, and she brought along 1,500 blood-pressure logs that Mercy Health printed in the Dari language.

The health workers now can travel to villages and teach other women how to monitor blood pressure and keep a log of their readings. The cuffs stay in the village, allowing people to have an early-warning device that that indicate when to visit a health clinic.

Sozo International focuses on the poor and under-served. Friskney’s daughter works for Sozo International, and the family has a history of service in troubled areas: They spent a year in Kosovo to help people affected by the war." rel="nofollow -
