MoD Accelerates Fight Against Corruption: Waziri
Meanwhile, a number of MPs said at the Wolesi Jirga’s (Lower House of Parliament) session on Saturday that corruption is a big problem in security agencies

Authorities in the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said they have swapped posts of at least 1,000 officials accused of corruption in procurement and finance departments of the ministry as part of their efforts to fight the phenomenon.

“We have many cases under investigation aimed at fighting corruption in the ministry. At least 6.1 billion Afs was saved in procurements and contracts last year. All these efforts are to fight corruption,” the MoD spokesman Dawlat Waziri told TOLOnews on Saturday.

Meanwhile, a number of MPs said at the Wolesi Jirga’s (Lower House of Parliament) session on Saturday that corruption is a big problem in security agencies.

“Unfortunately corruption has increased in Afghanistan’s security agencies,” MP Aref Rahmani said.

“Soldiers’ boots, caps as well as their ammunition, weapons and fuel are being sold and their procurement documents are passed,” another MP, Abdul Rahim Ayubi said.

Reports indicate that corruption and embezzlement happen in insecure and volatile provinces.

“The ammunition is distributed under the supervision of a commission from investigative and intelligence sectors. The investigative and intelligence sectors meanwhile monitor and approve the use of the ammunition,” Kunduz Police Chief Abdul Hamid Hamidi told TOLOnews.

“I can say for sure that there is corruption in food supply for soldiers. Soldiers are not receiving the food which has been given to them in the contract,” said Amruddin Wali, member of Kunduz Provincial Council.

This comes after the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, John Sopko, at an event in Duke University in the United States last week made shocking remarks on corruption in Afghan security agencies and said the combination of corruption and poor leadership in the security forces in Afghanistan is the root cause for their infectiveness.
