Dozens killed in Kandahar as unrest intensifies
Security forces and Taliban militants have clashed in various districts of southern Kandahar province, with both the warring sides suffering casualties, sources said on Wednesday.

A reliable security source told Pajhwok Afghan News that militants attacked police post in Wam Dara area of Arghistan district and the ensuing clash lasted several hours.

He said 10 police and eight attackers were killed and one policeman was missing and a dozen militants were wounded in the firefight.

Arghistan district is located about 100 kilometers southeast of Kandahar City, the provincial capital, near the border with Pakistan.

Elsewhere in Kandahar, militants stormed police posts in Mandigag and Shalghami areas of Khakrez district, sparking a gun-battle that continued for several hours.

A security official said three police were killed and four others were wounded in the clash about 60km north of Kandahar City. He said the insurgents had also suffered casualties, but they had no figures.

Separately, three civilians were killed when their passenger van struck a roadside bomb in Jogram area of Maiwand district.

Operations head for western districts Col. Sultan Mohammad said the slain people were civilians and they were on their way to the district bazaar.

On Wednesday, two US troops were killed when a suicide bomber rammed his explosives laden vehicle into their convoy near the provincial capital, Kandahar City.

Also on Wednesday, four people were wounded in a traffic accident involving two cars on the Kandahar-Spin Boldak highway.

Militants have recently stepped up their attacks on security posts in Kandahar province, the birth place of the Taliban.
