24 militants killed in eastern Afghan operations

PUL-E-ALAM, Afghanistan, March 2 (Xinhua) -- About 24 militants were killed by the Afghan Special Forces in two eastern provinces, local authorities said on Thursday.

In one operation, 16 Taliban were killed and eight others detained after Afghan commandos launched a night raid operation in Charkh district in Logar province, Salim Saleh, provincial government spokesman, told Xinhua.

"The raid was carried out on a specific intelligence inputs and among the killed was a Taliban local leader named Sana Gul," Saleh said, adding the security forces also seized weapons following the raid in the province, 60 km south of national capital Kabul.

In addition, eight militants of Islamic State (IS) were killed on Wednesday after an airstrike targeted a militants' bunker in Lal Poor district in neighboring Nangarhar province, according to a statement issued by the command of Afghan Special Forces earlier Thursday.

Furthermore, the special operation forces also captured four Taliban militants, including two Taliban weapons facilitators, in eastern Wardak province on Wednesday, according to the statement.

The Afghan security forces have beefed up security operations recently but the militants respond with bombings and armed attacks.

On Wednesday, up to 22 people were killed and 120 others wounded in twin suicide bombings in Kabul for which the Taliban has claimed responsibility.
